action

The development of the world population is shown as a curve on a timeline . A second curve joins it, which shows the global oil production . Both curves go almost vertically upwards in the following course, but shortly after the millennium the petroleum curve collapses and then the curve of population development : The end of civilization has heralded.

The survivalist lives in a world not too far in the future, where the only thing is to kill others or to be killed yourself, there is a great famine , the resources to survive have become scarce and every stranger is a potential danger . Away from the chaos of the big city, he tried as self-catering on a small piece of land in Northern Ireland , where he manages a piece of land to survive. Actually he tries to keep the hostile outside world away with his rifle and clever traps, but when one day Kathryn and her daughter Milja by chance discover his hiding place deep in the forest and seek shelter with it, the now very lonely survivor overcomes his distrust of him Strange. They make an agreement: sex with their daughter in exchange for food and a roof over their heads. The recluse, who has previously lived in seclusion, longs for human warmth and physical closeness, but their coexistence is shaped by a continued distrust of one another. Nevertheless, they also recognize that their three-person life under one roof is still better than what lies in wait for them in the outside world. Since the food available and what is grown in the garden is by no means enough for three people, Kathryn tries again and again to suggest plans to kill the farmer (his name is not mentioned) to her daughter. In the meantime Milja has noticed that her period is missing. Milja poisons her mother with mushrooms to make her dying easier. The survivalist kills her. When the two of them are attacked by strangers, Milja is able to flee, while the survivalist covers her escape. He is shot with a crossbow. In the last scene Milja applies for admission in a settlement. Whether it will be accepted remains open.

Reviews

Martin McCann can be seen in the film in the title role

The film was able to convince 97 percent of the Rotten Tomatoes critics (out of a total of 38 critics as of July 7, 2017). Jeannette Catsoulis of the New York Times feels in parts of The Survivalist , whom she describes as impressively slim and strictly controlled, the primitive allure of a silent film . Susanne Ostwald from the Neue Zürcher Zeitung describes the film as: A work that is soberly staged to the point of sparseness, which does not rely on the power of dialogue, but rather on a subtly worked out atmosphere of distrust and the will to survive. Luke Ryan Baldock from thehollywoodnews.com speaks of a haunting debut film that is considerate and profound at the same time , but also notes that the film shows that Stephen Fingleton had only made short films before because the film felt too lengthy before it was in it finally come to a turn. Matthew Coyle of Culture NI , an Irish arts and culture website, calls The Survivalist a compelling, hypnotic and masterful debut film.

John DeFore of The Hollywood Reporter says the title of the post-apocalyptic drama suggests how to envision the end times : “Every encounter with a new person takes a hard calculation to weigh the risks against the benefits they bring Because of the roving gangs, the three protagonists in the film would eventually be encouraged to work together, DeFore said. According to DeFore, Fingleton intelligently conceptualizes the vulnerability that comes with the seclusion of the small house in the woods.

The acting achievements of McCann, who shines with his credible and uncompromising portrayal of the title role , have also been highlighted many times . Luke Ryan Baldock of thehollywoodnews.com thinks McCann is fantastic and, with his haunted gaze, makes it superfluous to know the history of the world in which the film is set.

Torsten Dewi from wortvogel.de is impressed by the efficient use of the film's budget (of a little less than 1.3 million euros) : The Survivalist 'is a minimal film, shot with little money and primarily three actors in the forest. There are no big effects, no complicated action scenes, no humor, no direct genre elements. By all usual standards, the film shouldn't be very exciting. But he is. Because it is constructed very precisely, because it gives each figure specific, sometimes changing motivations, because it condenses the need for relationships and communities against the backdrop of the apocalypse , until the suspense runs like an inaudible humming sound through the entire duration.
