Berthold FG Gebäudek-Karlic (born September 27, 1982 in Vienna ), b. Berthold Franz Gerhard Karlic is an Austrian entrepreneur, investor, blogger, speaker and author.

He is President of the European Super Angel Club, Secretary General of the Business Angel Institute, Member of the Board of the Austrian Private Equity and Venture Capital Organization and a member of the Board of Directors of the German Corporate Venture Capital Association and was an expert in the European Commission's Horizon2020 program.

Education and scientific activity

Berthold FG Gebäudek-Karlic completed his school career in Vienna and the USA, where he spent an exchange year in Park Rapids , Minnesota. In 2000 he graduated from the Vienna Business School HAK 1, a business academy .

While working, he completed his master's degree in Management Science at the Vienna University of Economics and Business , and wrote his thesis in 2010 on the subject of “The Influence of Sentiment on the Foreign Exchange Market” . In addition to his entrepreneurial activities, Träger-Karlic is currently a doctoral candidate at the Institute for Innovation Management (IFI) at the Johannes Kepler University in Linz . His research focuses on equity finance, particularly early stage business finance with regard to business angels. His research methods combine qualitative and quantitative approaches supported by innovative data acquisition techniques.

In 2020, triggered by the corona crisis , Bauk-Karlic published a first version of the European Venture Sentiment Index, which is still in development, through his company Venionaire Capital, which gives an insight into his current practical research. The European Venture Sentiment Index is survey-based , from which a weighted index is calculated with an emphasis on valuations, the quality of the deal flow and the ability or willingness of investors to invest. Based on a simple, quarterly survey, responses are collected from a focus group and a smaller control group. These data sets are collected in two waves. In both focus groups, key players from European startup hubs (including Switzerland and Great Britain) are addressed.

Professional background

Berthold Bauk-Karlic was already working during his studies. He started his career at the Oesterreichische Nationalbank in the banking statistics and minimum reserve department. He then moved to a securities company, where he worked as a managing director from 2011 to 2013. In addition to his specialization in financing in the public sector at the time, he became a co-founder and business angel in a startup known today as courseticket.com (at that time decono GmbH, with the service ausgebendet.com), as an investor for the first time. To this day, he has a private 9.9% stake in the company.

In 2012 Bauk-Karlic founded the consulting and venture investment company Venionaire Capital, from which the Business Angel Institute emerged. The institute was founded as a non-profit initiative under the direction of Herwig Rollett and Bauk-Karlic and, together with a number of universities, developed training and personal certification according to ISO 17024 for Business Angels to become a Certified Business Angel (CBA), which is provided by the Chamber of Commerce Austria, but u. a. is also actively taught and awarded by partner organizations in Saudi Arabia and is recommended by the local Ministry of Justice as a prerequisite for startup investments.

In 2015, with the announcement of his company about a venture capital fund endowed with Euro 100 million, bauk-Karlic came into the media focus, but the project ultimately failed. The company again positioned itself more strongly in the consulting business and implemented numerous projects in the area of corporate startup engagement , such as the “Innovation to Company” project in cooperation with the Vienna Business Agency , which was awarded the European Enterprise Promotion Award by the European Commission in 2017 .

Tasks in the startup area

As president of the European Super Angels Club , general secretary of the Business Angel Institute , co-initiator of the Business Angel Summit in Kitzbühel and since 2018 as a board member of the Austrian Private Equity and Venture Capital Association and a member of the board of directors of the German Corporate Venture Capital Association .

As an external expert, he was a consultant in the European Commission's Horizon2020 and Innovation Radar programs . In Austria, he has already been active on several sounding boards of the Federal Ministry for Digitization and Business Location and accompanied the Federal Minister as part of the “Sound of Finance” delegation trip.

In an industry podcast by Florian Kandler, who is known as the “Pitch Doctor” , Gebäudek-Karlic spoke about investments and company valuation, and in 2019 in London he appeared as a jury member for startups in the live show xcite19 .

Author and blogger

Berthold Gebäudek-Karlic is the author of the book “Success Founder Made in Austria” and co-author of the “Handbuch Crowdfunding und AltFG”. He writes as a blogger and guest author for the industry portal derBrutkasten.com , deals regularly with various topics relating to angel and venture capital investments as well as startups, comments critically on political measures or publicly represents demands of the startup ecosystem, furthermore he shows opportunities and risks in connection with future technologies. On his personal blog, he also regularly posts assessments of technology stocks.

Teaching and lecturing activities

Berthold Bauk-Karlic teaches regularly at the Institute of Innovation Management (IFI) of the Johannes Kepler University Linz . As an expert, he is constantly present at international conferences and events, where he a. also addresses critical issues such as the culture of failure.

During his school days, Berthold Bauk-Karlic was involved in various associations, was deputy head of the school and was active in various voluntary organizations. He is a member of the Catholic Middle School Association K.Ö.St.V. Thuringia Vienna in the Middle Schools Cartel Association and the Catholic Academic Association KAV Danubia Wien-Korneuburg in the Austrian Cartell Association and member of the Rotary Club Wien-Gloriette, where he held several board positions. He lives in Vienna with his wife and two sons.
