Berthold Sternegger

Berthold Sternegger (born November 29, 1713 in Rossatz ; † January 24, 1793 in Graz ) was an Austrian Benedictine and the last abbot of St. Lambrecht's monastery before the Josephine repeal.

Life

Berthold Sternegger joined St. Lambrecht Abbey in 1730 and became a priest in 1737. From 1748 until his election as abbot in 1760 he was treasurer in Mariazell and as such published a history of the pilgrimage site on the occasion of the 600th anniversary. He also carried on the miracle books.

During his tenure, the monastery was closed in March 1786 by Emperor Josef II and his property was incorporated into the state religious fund. Abbot Berthold spent his last years in Graz, where he died in 1793. His epitaph is preserved on the outer wall of the parish church of St. Leonhard .
