Bertram von Zündorf

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bertram von Zündorf , also Betzin van Tzuendorff (before 1532 - after 1542) was a master builder and fortress builder in the duchies of Jülich-Kleve-Berg .

Life

Zündorf was mentioned in 1533 as the master builder for Duke Johann I von Jülich-Kleve-Berg . From that year he built the Düsseldorf Palace for him , the previous building of which, according to the Duisburg Chronicle , burned down on December 23, 1510. The castle, which was located in the center of the united territories of its sovereign and was built together with the city fortifications according to the latest findings in fortress construction, assumed the function of a preferred ducal residence. Thus Düsseldorf replaced the city of Kleve as the most important residential city on the Lower Rhine . From 1538 to 1542, Zündorf expanded the Heinsberg Fortress according to the same scheme . His activity can also be proven at the fortresses of Brüggen and Jülich . In 1549 the Italian Alessandro Pasqualini took over his position as the ducal fortress builder .
