The topic-oriented project career orientation at the Realschule ( TOP BORS for short ) is a project at Realschulen in Baden-Württemberg and looks back on over 25 years of tradition.

The educational standards introduced for TOP BORS in 2004 form the basis for today's implementation. and the handout for teachers from 2008 Competencies and content for TOP BORS can also be found within the educational standards of numerous subjects, subject groups and other topic-oriented projects.

Organization of TOP BORS

The implementation of TOP BORS in schools is diverse. The organization ranges from project days or weeks, to a separate subject "TOP BORS" in the timetable, integration into regular lessons and mixed forms of these options. The management of TOP BORS in the individual classes can, for example, be the responsibility of the teacher of the subject association Geography, Economics and Community Studies , the class teacher, the BORS representative or a BORS team. The concrete implementation of the 72-hour project is also decided by the school itself. The one-week internship is also one of the required minimum number of hours, many schools achieve a significantly higher number of hours and form a focus in their school curriculum. In addition to the content and competencies mentioned in the educational standards, e.g. B. Application in the subject German , for example, regional features within the school curriculum can supplement the core curriculum of the educational standards. The time focus for TOP BORS is in grade 9, but depending on the school, certain topics are already in grade 8, e.g. B. if the school internship takes place at the beginning of grade 9.

Project appraisal and attestation

The project ends with a project appraisal. The grade results from the project assessment, documentation and other student achievements (e.g. internship report, application letter ...). The attestation, which in addition to the numerical grade also contains an individual verbal assessment, is attached to the certificate. Participation in TOP BORS is noted on the certificate itself.
The presentation of the project appraisal by TOP BORS also serves as a methodical preparation for the "project appraisals" in class 10 ( Eurokom , subject-internal examinations in NWA and in the elective area and interdisciplinary competence examination).

Extent of project-like work

The educational standards for TOP BORS stipulate that the pupils develop the work, external contacts, etc., organize themselves and advise each other within the project, but this is often not achieved by the schools in this comprehensive way.
For teacher training courses and in the handout published in 2008, the requirements for the scope of project-like work were therefore somewhat reduced: the students should now carry out at least one team project from the six mandatory competence areas and work on a topic themselves in a team. The educational standards, however, represent a formulation of goals for project-like work towards which the school should work.

Mandatory areas of competence

Important content specified by the educational standards are aspects of career choice , educational pathways in Baden-Württemberg , the vocational training relationship , company and workplace exploration (internship), the changing professional world and application . The creation of an individual project folder, the implementation of a team project and the project review consisting of presentation and dialogue are also binding.
