The Professional Association for Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery (BVOU) (formerly: Professional Association of Specialists for Orthopedics BVO) is the largest professional organization in Germany for doctors in the fields of orthopedics and trauma surgery with around 7,000 members and a coverage of around 2/3 of the specialist practices.

The association was founded on April 29, 1951 in the legal form of a registered association with its seat in Berlin. The association, which operates nationwide, is headed by an eight-member board with a president, two vice-presidents, treasurer, three other members (i.e. seven elected members) and the general secretary of the German Society for Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery (DGOU) . The office is located in Berlin. Organizationally, state and district structures with respective state and district officers are located below this. The regional associations are regionally congruent with the federal states with two exceptions: in North Rhine-Westphalia and Baden-Württemberg there are separate units for North Rhine and Westphalia and for Baden and Württemberg.

The association is a co-organizer of the annual German Congress for Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery in Berlin in autumn, a member of a number of national and international specialist organizations and (co-) editor of the journal Orthopädie und Unfallchirurgie ( Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery) . It sets up and maintains commissions and working groups on certain topics relevant to orthopedic trauma surgery, partly together with the German Society for Orthopedics and Orthopedic Surgery (DGOOC) as the Alliance of German Orthopedists. He is also together with the DGOOC founder and sponsor of the advanced training academy Academy of German Orthopedists (ADO). The BVOU is a member of the National Association of Specialists in Germany (SpiFa). Membership in the BVOU is chargeable; Certain groups such as retirees, doctors in further education and medical students are reduced or non-contributory.

Furthermore, under the umbrella of the professional association, there are competence networks with a regional focus (for example from the state associations, but also in smaller regional structures), on the other hand also nationwide on certain special topics such as endoprosthetics , rheumatology or osteoporosis .
