Stocking (grain)
Contaminants are called unwanted components of a grain batch . Depending on the type of grain ( wheat , barley , maize, etc.) and intended use (seed grain, bread grain, fodder grain), the definition and permissible proportion of the stock vary.
Contaminants must be removed before storage or grinding because they:
- is harmful or even poisonous (e.g. ergot , weed seeds such as easter egg , hemlock )
- increases the mineral content (e.g. clods of earth, weed seeds)
- increases the moisture content (e.g. weed seeds)
- Causes color changes in flour and baked goods (e.g. grain wheels )
- Damages machines or systems (e.g. stones, metal parts)
- is nauseating (e.g. animal infestation, feces)
- unnecessarily used storage space
The stock content (in%) is determined by means of a stock analysis . A distinction is made between grain contamination, black contamination (also called "foreign contamination") and animal infestation.
For grain impurities include
- Schmachtkorn (also called "Kümmerkorn", not fully developed grains <2 mm thick)
- Broken grain (damaged grain with exposed flour core)
- Grains sprouted
- Foreign grain (seeds from other grain crops)
- Pest feeding (grains that have been eaten by rodents or punctured by insects)
- Grains with germ discoloration and
- grains overheated by drying.
As Black Facing apply
- spoiled grains
- Weed seeds (toxic / non-toxic)
- Ergot
- Fire hips
- Impurities (dust, stones, metal parts, straw) and husks
Animal infestation
- insects
- Insect parts
