Besboro Island is an uninhabited island of the Bering Sea , which is located in Norton Sound , which belongs to Alaska . The rugged island is about 18 km from the mainland and 61 km from Christmas Mountain ( Nulato Hills ).
Besboro is 3 km long and reaches its highest point at 248 m. Administratively, the island belongs to the Nome Census Area . The island is part of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge .
The island was first sighted by James Cook on September 12, 1778 , and he recorded it as "Besborough Island" on the nautical charts.
