Broomstick robbers
Harald Zirngibl (* 1952 ), who became known as a broomstick robber , attacked a total of 16 banks between 1992 and 1998, stealing around DM 4.6 million.
He was nicknamed the broomstick robber because he took a total of 73 hostages during the raids, locked his victims and additionally locked the doors with a broomstick. Nevertheless, he was considered a polite bank robber who treated the bank employees carefully. In contrast to many of his "colleagues", he did not go to the cash register to ask for money, but instead seized the bank employee when entering or leaving the bank premises before or after work or during the lunch break and usually had the money out of the safe , sometimes also from the ATM .
He was arrested by the police in November 1998 and subsequently sentenced to 13 years and six months in prison, of which he was given three years probation in April 2009 and has since been released.
In October 2011 he published a book about his life as a bank robber.
On February 22nd, 2016, he was arrested on suspicion of having blackmailed FC Bayern Munich . Zirngibl demanded one million Swiss francs and diamonds worth three million euros. Otherwise he wanted to detonate a bomb in the Allianz Arena or inform the public about such a danger. He was sentenced to four years and ten months in prison.
