Bessarion is a small impact crater near the southwestern bank of the Oceanus Procellarum . In a short distance to the north, the very bright secondary crater Bessarion E can be seen. To the east lies the T. Mayer crater and to the south Kepler with its conspicuous radiation system.
The circular, bowl-shaped crater has a low, central elevation. It has a higher albedo than the surrounding lunar surface and therefore appears particularly bright when the sun is high.
The moon crater is named after the Byzantine-Roman clergyman and humanist Bessarion (1403–1472).
