Bessel van der Kolk

Bessel van der Kolk (born 1943 in The Hague ) is a Dutch psychiatrist and author . The focus of his work is trauma therapy and research on post-traumatic stress disorders . Van der Kolk is Professor of Psychiatry at Boston University Medical School in the United States . He became known to a wide audience in particular through his non-fiction book The Body Keeps the Score , published in 2014 , which has since been translated into numerous other languages.

Life

Bessel van der Kolk was born in the Netherlands during World War II . In 1965 he earned a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Hawaii . Until 1970 he studied medicine at the University of Chicago . In 1974 he completed his residency in psychiatry at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center in Boston.

In 1982 he founded the Trauma Center in Brookline, Massachusetts .
