Determination exercise

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A determination exercise is a practical exercise for the determination of organisms (animals, plants, protozoa etc.). Determination exercises are an important part of the academic training of biologists , landscape ecologists , geoecologists , and sometimes also of environmental scientists . In the exercises, identifying organisms is practiced with the help of relevant identification keys (so-called dichotomous keys). In these, the presence or absence or the structure or shape of features is queried step by step. Through decision-making situations that build on each other, one finally arrives at the species identification by carefully examining the animal or the plant (often in the form of a preparation). In addition to courses that are more focused on the internal anatomy and histology of living beings, identification exercises form the practical basis for knowledge of zoology , botany and vegetation . As in many other academic subjects, few textbooks that are now used as standard in the courses have gained acceptance over time. In zoology these are above all the "Stresemann" or the "Bährmann" and in botany the "Rothmaler".

In addition to the classification of living beings, minerals or the like can also be dealt with in determination exercises using a decision tree .
