Bethania is a suburb of Brisbane with 5385 inhabitants (as of 2016). It is located about 25 kilometers south of downtown on the Logan River . The place was originally called Bethanien and its name was adapted in everyday life.
Bethania was founded by German immigrants in the 19th century. The government in Queensland , Australia commissioned John Heussler, the immigration agent, to organize the German settlement. In cooperation with the shipping company Joh. Ces. Godeffroy & Sohn came to Australia from Hamburg in 1864 and founded Bethanien. Within a few years, 200 settlers built a Lutheran church and school and created a cemetery. The place had a blacksmith , wheelwright and other craftsmen.
In 1887 the place was flooded by the Logan River. In 1949 the suburb was expanded, a Lutheran Primary School was established and the Bethania Waters Shopping Center was built in 1986. There is a State Primary School and Community Center .
