The operating category symbol of the Deutsche Reichsbahn was a designation system for steam locomotives . This made it possible to identify locomotives of different designs with the same operating characteristics. This made it easier to use the different steam locomotives of the earlier regional railways.

The system was introduced in 1924 and consisted of four parts.

  1. A letter from the adjacent table that specifies the type of locomotive (express locomotive, passenger locomotive, etc.).
  2. A mostly two-digit number that shows the number of coupled axles in its first position and the total number of axles on the locomotive in the second . The axes of tenders are not taken into account.
  3. The axle load of the driving axles is indicated in tons, separated by a point .
  4. Is of the vehicle belonging parts gauging exceeded, this is indicated by a triangle on the axle load in (right). In this case, if only a removable chimney top protrudes from the vehicle gauge, this is indicated by an additional bar above the tip of the triangle (photo on the left).

It was planned to use the generic symbols also on the electric locomotives. Since these can be used more universally, this project was abandoned.
