Bettina Engels

Bettina Engels (* 1978 ) is a German political scientist . She is junior professor for empirical conflict research with a regional focus on Sub-Saharan Africa at the Otto Suhr Institute (OSI) at the Free University of Berlin .

Life

Bettina Engels studied political science and psychology at the University of Bremen and the Free University of Berlin from 1998 to 2004. She then qualified in development policy issues through a program of the Seminar for Rural Development (SLE) at the Humboldt University in Berlin . She then worked on her doctorate with the title “Motives of Non-State Actors in Armed Conflicts. The Forces Nouvelles de Côte d'Ivoire ”and was thus awarded his doctorate in 2010 at the OSI of the Free University of Berlin. This was followed by positions as junior professor (post doc) for empirical conflict research at the University of Bayreuth and participation in research projects. Since 2014 she has been teaching as a junior professor for empirical conflict research with a focus on sub-Saharan Africa at the OSI. Your position will be financed by the "Excellence Initiative of the DFG". She heads the GLOCON junior research group.

First, Engels examined political and social conflicts from a social research perspective that was more strongly influenced by gender theories. Today she examines the developments in African countries before conflicts over land and resources, as they are also dealt with in political ecology . She takes into account social movements in Africa and is based on theoretical concepts such as action theory .
