from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Mauthausen – Gusen – St. Georgen is a community association of the political communities Mauthausen , Langenstein and St. Georgen an der Gusen "for the purpose of humanizing society and creating a critical and vigilant awareness".

aims

It takes up the desire for a future-oriented and beneficial approach to the region of the Mühlviertel, which was heavily burdened by the former National Socialist concentration camps Mauthausen and Gusen, and above all invites today's residents through new forms of political education and political participation in the to contribute to the future handing down of the historical legacy of the tens of thousands of concentration camp victims in this region. In addition to ensuring respectful remembrance, she wants to make the region's burdened historical heritage usable as a “space of remembrance and learning”, especially for profitable learning with regard to the social problems of the present for the future. The initiative is also about helping those who live in the direct vicinity of former concentration camps to deal with the past in a viable way.

Emergence

The initiative arose in the years 2013–2016 in connection with years of efforts to ensure adequate monument protection for the remains of the former German concentration camp complex St. Georgen-Mauthausen-Gusen, which had not yet been protected. After a round table by the Federal Monuments Office in Vienna (the project was still under the name "Triangel" at the time), the three founding municipalities submitted an application on May 22, 2015 according to Upper Austrian provincial law. Intercommunal cooperation between the Upper Austrian municipalities involved is intended to promote the entire region, which has been deeply affected by the historical events, and enable future-oriented commemoration to deal with the National Socialist past with the involvement of the population.

organization

The Mauthausen – Gusen – St. Georgen has its headquarters and an office in the municipal office of the Mauthausen market town and, in addition to the community association established on January 18, 2016, has also been active since November 9, 2016 through a support association open to all interested parties, which in turn is divided into individual topic-centered ideas workshops / working groups. These are currently:

  • population
  • education
  • youth
  • Science, Art and Monument Preservation
  • Re-use and maintenance of buildings, places and infrastructure
  • Tourism and economy

International orientation

The Mauthausen – Gusen – St. Georgen sees itself in particular as a project partner for intercultural cooperation far beyond the national borders of Austria and, above all, would like to involve the population of the region in a cosmopolitan, firm and sustainable manner in a future-oriented common political culture in Europe that is based on humanity and vigilance .
