Beyond was a space mission of the European Space Agency (ESA) in which the astronaut Luca Parmitano stayed on board the International Space Station (ISS) for 200 days . The name of this mission says nothing about its content. It is common for ESA astronauts to have an individual motto for their mission.

preparation

Parmitano was officially selected as a spaceman by the European Space Agency ESA in May 2009. In 2013 he flew to the ISS with the Soyuz TMA-09M spacecraft and spent six months there as a flight engineer on ISS expeditions 36 and 37 .

In June 2018 it was announced that Parmitano would fly into space for a second long-term stay as part of ISS expeditions 60 and 61 . As a substitute for Parmitano, the Japanese spaceman Sōichi Noguchi was provided.

Mission history

Parmitano took off for the ISS on July 20, 2019 with the Soyuz MS-13 spacecraft . He was accompanied by Alexander Skworzow and Andrew Morgan . At the station they joined Expedition 60 , which also included Commander Alexei Ovtschinin from Russia and flight engineers Nick Hague and Christina Hammock Koch from the USA.

On October 3, 2019, Expedition 60 ended and Expedition 61 began. While Ovchinin, Hague and Hassa al-Mansuri , an astronaut from the United Arab Emirates who started with Soyuz MS-15 , returned to Earth with Soyuz MS-12 , Parmitano stayed with Koch, Skworzow, Morgan and Oleg Skripotschka and Jessica Meir (both launched with Soyuz MS-15 ) on the ISS. On October 2, 2019, Parmitano was the first Italian to take command of the ISS.

On February 6, 2020, Parmitano returned to earth with Skworzow and Koch. The Beyond mission ended with the landing in Kazakhstan .
