Beyond Black Void is a funeral doom project founded by Stijn van Cauter in 2002 .
history
Stijn van Cauter initiated Beyond Black Void as one of a variety of solo projects. Beyond Black Void is one of the various side projects of van Cauter's main band Until Death Overtakes Me . Most of the project's releases appeared on van Cauter's label Nulll Records . Beyond Black Void has occasionally released on other labels such as Marche Funebre Productions . The album Desolate was particularly well received, on which the opinions of the critics differed. While Christian Wögerbauer judged for Vampster that the album "should rather be in the curiosity corner than on the recommendation list", Kostas Panagiotou praised Desolate for Doom-Metal.com as the "most depressive, depressing, nihilistic and desolate figure in the entire spectrum of dark music". The assessments of other reviews were similarly split. The album is "emotionless and soulless" against the assessment it is the consequent minimalist funeral doom, which "possesses an inherent majesty that is easy to overlook". In 2011 van Cauter temporarily stopped producing other music. It wasn't until 2019 that he reactivated Beyond Black Void and released the album Voidgaze .
style
The music of Beyond Black Void is assigned to the Funeral Doom. The webzine Doom-Metal.com describes the style presented with the project in contrast to other projects maintained by van Cauter as being more focused on an extreme funeral doom. In reviews, too, reference is made to the extreme minimalism of the music. The music is reduced to "guitar, timpani and vocals". Essentially, the music is limited to the game between a high and slow lead guitar and an extremely low-pitched bass guitar.
“Desolate diligently makes use of nothing or a little. The three songs, which last just over 70 minutes, have just 30 words of text, and I think the number of guitar strings struck is in a similar range. "
