The district building (also called the old school house ) is a listed building in Baden , Switzerland . Originally built as a schoolhouse in 1856/57 , the classicistic building is now the seat of the Baden district authorities . It is located immediately south of the old town on Schulhausplatz , the city's most important transport hub.

History of construction and use

For the first time in 1835, the Baden municipal council planned to build a school house in order to unite all classes under one roof. The area of the former Agnesspital west of the parish church was intended for this , but the project did not materialize. The question of the location was only resolved twenty years later: the site of the Capuchin monastery , which was closed in 1841, and the Gubler estate to the west were to be used. In the same year, the local architect Robert Moser won the project competition, outpacing Joseph Caspar Jeuch, among others . Ferdinand Stadler was part of the jury .

Construction work began at the end of May 1856, and the topping-out ceremony was celebrated in October. The school was able to start operating a year later. The immediately adjacent Capuchin monastery was demolished, although the church was initially retained as a school chapel, but was also demolished in 1877. In 1983 the canton of Aargau took over the building from the city of Baden and had it refurbished for its own needs. Today the canton police and the district prison are housed here.

The building has three floors and consists of a 22-meter-long central wing and two symmetrically attached, 11-meter-wide transverse wings protruding on both long sides. Only the eastern side entrance breaks the symmetry of the floor plan. The 16 former classrooms are arranged so that most of them face south, but none exclusively face north. The building was originally placed in such a way that its front faced directly on Weite Gasse, the most important north-south axis of the old town. However, since the school building square was expanded into a busy traffic junction in 1961, the line of sight to the city tower has been considerably restricted.

In the area in front of the district building is a fountain that was built in 1866. A 5.20 meter high obelisk rises on a square base in the middle of the well trough . The oval basin is decorated with ornaments.
