It tells the story of the young engineer Siddhartha, who comes back from the USA to his native India to improve the water quality of the Ganges. Although her father has already chosen a man for her, Siddharta falls in love with the bewitching Bharati - and with India. "Bharati" means India in Hindi .

More important than the actual story is the monumentality of the performance. For more than two hours, more than 60 dancers, 15 musicians and six singers dance, sing and act on stage, wearing over 1000, in some cases immensely elaborate, glittering costumes.

20 songs were selected from a myriad of songs. In addition to two compositions from well-known Bollywood productions, a large number of original compositions are part of Bharati's music - in which folklore and pop elements merge. The soundtrack is dominated by instruments such as sitars , drums, tambourines and jew's harps, and is also available on CD.
