Bhrigu Kumar Phukan

Bhrigu Kumar Phukan (born April 25, 1956 in Sivasagar , Assam , † March 20, 2006 in New Delhi ) was an Indian politician.

Phukan led a campaign against foreigners in the 1980s with the student organization All Assam Students Union (AASU) . He was then the General Secretary of the AASU. In 1985 the historic Assam Accord was signed between the AASU and the government . The AASU founded the Asom Gana Parishad party in 1985 and won the elections and Phukan became the youngest interior minister in India at the age of 30 in Assam. In 1991 a dispute split the AGP and Phukan formed the Natun Asom Gana Parishad party . Due to the split, the AGP lost the 1991 election.

In 1996 the NAGP disbanded and Phukan returned to the AGP, only to leave again in 1998 and to found the Asom Jatiya Sanmilani party. In 2001 his party merged with the Nationalist Congress Party . Phukan later rejoined the AGP.

Phukan died of multiple organ failure, leaving behind his wife and daughter.
