Bhutanitis ludlowi is a butterfly from the family of the swallowtail butterfly (Papilionidae). It belongs to the subfamily Parnassiinae, which also includes the Apollo butterfly.

features

Bhutanitis ludlowi is similar to the related species Bhutanitis lidderdalii , but has wider wings, is paler in color and has gray transverse ligaments.

distribution

The two related species B. ludlowi and B. lidderdalii appear to be found in similar areas in Bhutan and Yunnan, China, but it is unknown whether they inhabit the same habitats. It is believed that B. ludlowi also occurs in Sichuan (China).

biology

Bhutanitis ludlowi is a forest inhabitant and lives at an altitude of 2000 to 2200 meters. The biology of the species is so far unknown. It is assumed that the caterpillars develop on Aristolochia species as in the related species B. lidderdalii .

Research history

The species was previously only known from two collections. The Typus specimens were collected from 1933 to 1934 by Gabriel in the Trashiyangsi Valley in northeast Bhutan. They are in the Natural History Museum in London. Chou described a specimen from Yunnan, China in 1994. Photos of Bhutanitis ludlowi were published in August 2011 . Workers at the Bumdeling Wildlife Sanctuary in Bhutan and a research team from the Butterfly Society of Japan found mating specimens.

Hazard and protection

All species of the genus Bhutanitis are listed in Appendix II of the Washington Convention on Endangered Species . The trade in animals is therefore restricted. Until recently, no trade in specimens of the species was described, although it is in great demand with collectors. The species is considered endangered.
