The Bibby WaveMaster class belongs to a new type of wind farm service vessel and is managed by Bibby Marine Services.

Task and commitment

The ASV 9020 wind farm suppliers of the Bibby WaveMaster class were specially designed by the client Bibby Marine Services and the Damen shipyard for the maintenance of wind farms in order to increase the sea endurance on site from 50–60% of the time to 80%.

The Bibby WaveMaster 1 with the IMO number 9773595 was ordered from the Damen Group in January 2016, handed over in September 2017 and then went to the Galloper offshore wind farm off the coast of Great Britain for three months. This was followed by a 3-year charter to develop gas platforms in the North Sea.

The Bibby Wavemaster Horizon with IMO number 9856957 is in the offshore wind farm high seas and offshore wind farm Albatros used four weeks, and thereafter each in Emden equipped for the next application period. The Bibby WaveMaster Horizon sailing under the British flag was chartered by Siemens Gamesa and Enbw for 10 years.

The design and construction were largely carried out at the Romanian shipyard of Damen Shipyards Galati. The 90 m long and 20 m wide ship with the IMO number 9856957 was therefore equipped with a special walk-to-work device in order to ensure that the fitters can safely move onto the wind turbines even in swells of up to 3 m. It consists of a special crane, elevator tower and movement compensated gangway to ensure a safe and stepless transition up to 26 meters above sea level.

The ships are equipped for dynamic positioning (DP-System DP-2) and have a helicopter landing pad on the bow for helicopters with a takeoff weight of up to 12 t. The hull shape has been optimized for working in the North Sea and the drive is diesel-electric. Four main machines of the type Caterpillar CAT C3516 with 2275 kW each and two CAT C32 with 950 kW each are used to generate electricity. The ship is propelled by two Schottel rudder propellers of the type SRP 1515 with 1800 kW each. There is also a lowerable Schottel SRP 500 with 860 kW and two STT4 transverse thrusters with 860 kW each.

The ships are equipped to accommodate 60 people, 20 for ship operation and 40 fitters, who usually have 14 days of service.
