The USS Paul Ignatius (DDG-117) is a destroyer commissioned by the United States Navy in July 2019 . The ship belongs to the Arleigh Burke class .
history
The Paul Ignatius was laid down on October 20, 2015 as a unit of the Flight IIA of the Arleigh Burke class in the shipyard of Ingalls Shipbuilding . The destroyer is named after Paul Robert Ignatius , former United States Secretary of the Navy under Lyndon B. Johnson . Ignatius is one of the few people after whom a United States Navy ship was named during his lifetime.
The Paul Ignatius was launched on November 12, 2016. Godmother was Nancy W. Ignatius († 2019), the wife of the namesake. The ship was put into service on July 27, 2019 in Port Everglades .
