BiberClan is the name of a card game by the German game designer Jörg von Rüden , which was published by Amigo in 2018 . It is a stand-alone card game, which is optically adapted to the Amigo game Biberbande from 2002 and can be combined with it.

Theme and equipment

At BiberClan the players try to get the highest possible cards or card combinations in their own card display and to secure them so that they are not exchanged by the opponents. When a player has completed his beaver castle, the game goes to the final round and the winner is the player who has the most points in his castle at the end.

The game material consists of 66 playing cards as well as instructions. This contains 52 number cards, with the values 1 to 3 each six times, 4 to 6 each five times, 7 to 9 each four times and the value 0 seven times, as well as 14 special cards with 5 cards "clearing" and 9 cards "turning over". There are also six player boards (beaver castles) with space for five number cards.

Style of play

At the beginning of the game, each player receives a beaver castle, which he places in front of him. The playing cards are shuffled and form a face-down draw pile that is placed in the middle of the table. In addition to this pile, there is also a discard pile in the game.

Starting with the starting player, the players play in clockwise order. Each player takes the top card from the draw pile and looks at it; it can be a number card from “0” to “9” or a special card. If it is a number card, he may place it in his own beaver castle or in that of another player. He may place them in a free space or exchange them with a card, and place them face up or face down in the castle. If he exchanges a card in another player's castle, he must place the exchanged card face up or face down on a free space in his own beaver castle. If this was a face-down card, the player may look at it in front of the display. If the player exchanges a card in his own beaver castle, he puts the exchanged card on the open discard pile.

Protected cards cannot be exchanged or influenced by special cards. Cards are considered protected if they are covered by a card in a row above them. As soon as a player removes the card on top, the protection is lifted. In addition, a card is protected if it is the only open card in a beaver castle, in this case it can only be exchanged by the owner of the castle or influenced by special cards.

If the card drawn is a special card, the player may take the corresponding special action and then remove the card from the game. Then he draws another card and can get another number or special card. The special cards are:

  • Clear: The player must take an unprotected card from any beaver castle and put it on the discard pile.
  • Turn over: The player must turn over an unprotected card in any beaver castle.

If a special offer cannot be carried out, it will expire; if it is feasible, however, it must be carried out.

As soon as a player has five cards in his beaver castle, the last round of the round begins, whereby the fifth card may only be placed in his own beaver castle by the respective player. The cards of this castle are protected and all players have another turn afterwards. Then all players reveal their cards in the castle and add up the values on the cards. If a player has three identical number cards in his Biberburg, he receives an additional bonus of 15 points for this, and with four identical number cards the bonus increases to 25 points. If there are five identical cards in his beaver castle, he immediately wins the entire game. The player who completed his castle first receives a penalty of 10 points if another player has collected more points than him after adding up all the numerical values and bonus points.

A total of five rounds are played. The game is won by the player who has the most points overall after all rounds.

Combination with beaver gang

The BiberClan game can be combined with the Biberbande card game from the same publisher. All playing cards from BiberClan with four number cards each from “0” to “9” and seven special cards “Exchange” and “Scouting” from Biberbande are shuffled and laid out as a common draw pile .

In the game, all rules apply analogously to BiberClan , whereby the additional special cards have the following effects:

  • Exchange: The player has to exchange two unprotected cards from two different beaver castles, either one from his own beaver castle for a card from the beaver castle of another player or two cards from the beaver castles of two other players. The player is not allowed to look at face down cards.
  • Peeking: The player may pick up a face-down card that is not protected in any beaver castle

secretly watch.
