The Biblioteca Municipal Central de Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Central Library of the City of Santa Cruz) is located in the building of the Tenerife Espacio de las Artes TEA. The city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is responsible for the library . The establishment is supported by the Cabildo de Tenerife. The library is part of the Red de Bibliotecas de Canarias BICA (Network of Libraries in the Canary Islands). The media offer is aimed primarily at users with a scientific interest. Lending literature, especially fiction, is not necessarily the focus of the library. The facility is a working library.

History of the library

The Biblioteca Municipal de Santa Cruz de Tenerife was opened on April 2, 1888. At that time it comprised 7,000 volumes, mainly from the Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País (Economic Association of Friends of the Country) and from Francisco de León Morales, the city's first librarian. The library was initially set up in the secularized Franciscan monastery . In 1927 she was temporarily housed in the rooms of the bar association. In 1932, together with the Museum of Fine Arts, she was able to move into the purpose-built building on Calle José Murphy in the Plaza del Príncipe . From 1999, rooms in the adjacent courthouse were also used. The library was expanded by the teaching collection of the drawing academy and many donations in kind from private individuals. There was no planned purchase policy until the 1950s. Since 1977 a book bus (Biblioguagua) has also supplied the outskirts of the city. In 1988 the catalog was converted to electronic data processing. In 1995 the Biblioteca Federico García Lorca was opened in the district of Ofra and in 2002 the Biblioteca José Saramago in the district of Añaza was opened as branch offices. The multimedia age began in 2002 with the first CD loan for the Biblioteca Municipal Central de Santa Cruz de Tenerife. In 2008 the library moved to its new premises in Tenerife Espacio de las Artes . The following year, the collections were integrated into the Red de Bibliotecas Canarias BICA (network of libraries in the Canary Islands).

Structure of the central library

The central library is divided into three areas:

  • Sala general (general hall) on the ground floor
  • Children's and youth library in the basement
  • non-public part, depot and administration

Sala general

In the Sala general there are around 200 workstations at desks, each with separate lighting and power connections. There are also around 100 reading places on sofas and 36 computer places for general use, as well as two computers for catalog queries and a coin-operated photocopier. The hall and the café next door have free WiFi (WLAN). From Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 8:45 p.m., library staff can be contacted at seven places. The room is air-conditioned and accessible 24 hours a day, including Sundays and public holidays (so the library is always open). There are around 100,000 books and 14,000 CDs and DVDs on the shelves. Exhibitions on current topics are regularly held in a designated area in the hall. The newspaper archive is in a special part of this room. Current editions of the local and large parts of the national and international daily press can be viewed there. The newspaper archive includes almost the entire newspaper press on the island of Tenerife, some of it going back to 1785, as original documents, microfilms or digital copies.

Children's and youth library

The children's and youth library has 150 reading spaces. There are around 20,000 books and 3,000 CDs and DVDs on the shelves. There are twelve computer workstations for general use. There are IT courses for senior citizens in the mornings. Library staff can be addressed in two places. Various activities for children and young people take place here during the holidays. This part of the library is open Monday to Friday from 3:30 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. during school hours.

Non-public part

In the non-public part of the library there are four more workstations at which microfilm documents can be viewed. The depot houses around 200,000 original documents.

Access

Access to the facilities in the open access library, the Internet and the daily press is free. An identity card must be presented when using the library computer. To borrow media, you need to register and issue a reading card free of charge. This is valid for all Canarian libraries. The loan itself is free of charge. Photocopies, computer printouts and participation in some special events (courses) are chargeable.
