The Tenerife Espacio de las Artes (TEA) institution is an art and cultural center in Santa Cruz de Tenerife . In the building there are various exhibition, cinema and lecture halls, the Biblioteca Municipal de Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the Centro de Fotografía Isla de Tenerife on an area of 20,622 m² . The opening took place on October 31, 2008. In the planning and construction phase, the project was called Instituto Óscar Domínguez de Arte y Cultura Contemporánea (IODACC) . The building was designed by the Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron together with the local architect Virgilio Gutiérrez.

Location

The building is located in downtown Santa Cruz de Tenerife on the right side of the Barranco de Santos in the immediate vicinity of the building of the Old Hospital Civil (citizen hospital) in which the Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre is located. The upper entrance of the TEA is opposite the Nuestra Señora de Africa market . The library and restaurant are accessible from the Barranco de Santos. The TEA can be easily reached by public transport (Guagua and Tranvia) from all parts of the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, as well as from the neighboring university town of La Laguna .

architecture

patio

The parts of the building are based on the model of a Canarian mansion around a triangular inner courtyard (patio). While it looks very closed from the outside due to its pixel-like, mirrored glass concrete blocks and the concrete surfaces, the impression from the inside is exactly the opposite due to the large glass surfaces to the patio or to the open-topped areas behind the outer walls. A public footpath that runs right through the building through the inner courtyard connects via a ramp the area of the Nuestra Señora de Africa market with the old town around the Concepción church.

Facilities

Upper entrance of the building

The inner courtyard is suitable for events such as theater or music performances. There are three halls on three levels for art exhibitions at the TEA, a “ballroom” (Sala de actos) for lectures and regular film screenings, a room for video screenings, and a room that is particularly suitable for workshop courses with children. These facilities can be reached through the main entrance in the patio. Another exhibition hall, which is primarily used by the Centro de Fotografía Isla de Tenerife , is only accessible to visitors from the Barranco. The café-restaurant and the library are on the same level as the WiFi zone . All catalogs of past exhibitions are sold in the museum shop with an entrance directly on the General Serador bridge. In addition, there are books on the artists whose works are exhibited and objects of modern handicrafts. In the back of the shop there are exhibitions related to the films currently being shown in the ballroom. The entrance to the administration rooms of the "Área de Cultura, Patrimonio Histórico y Museos" is on the east side of the building. The Biblioteca Municipal de Santa Cruz de Tenerife takes up a large part of the Tenerife Espacio de las Artes .

The following artists have been shown in solo exhibitions since the opening: Eberhard Bosslet , Stipo Pranyko , Pedro Garhel , Martín y Sicilia , Óscar Domínguez , Teo Sabando , Juan Gopar , Pablo Picasso , Carlos Schwarz , Thomas Ruff , Alexis W. , Patti Smith , Juan Hidalgo , Roland Penrose , Tatsumi Orimoto and many more in thematic exhibitions.
