Pedro Garhel

Pedro Garhel (born August 26, 1952 in Puerto de la Cruz , Tenerife , † December 6, 2005 in La Guancha ) was a Spanish performance artist .

Career

Pedro Garhel was born on the Canary Island of Tenerife in 1952 and lived in Madrid from 1974 to 1997. He first became interested in painting and music and studied from 1971 to 1977 design . In addition to his studies, he devoted himself to training in experimental dance .

Pedro Garhel has been working with Rosa Galindo in the field of performance and installation since 1977 and as a video artist since 1980 . Together they founded the group Corps (1977–1984), the center for experimental video art and performance Espacio “P” (1981–1997) in Madrid and in 1983 the multimedia and sound group Depósito Dental .

Garhel and Galindo develop performances with the help of religious motifs with the themes of pain, ecstasy and death, in combination with elements from everyday Spanish life.

From 1992 to 1997 Garhel was Professor of Art and Computer Science in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Salamanca .

Pedro Garhel's works were shown at the 1987 documenta 8 in Kassel Performance ( Dedicato A La Memoria by Garhel and Galindo), at the Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe, at the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid and Ars Electronica in Linz.
