The Biblioteca Nazionale Universitaria di Torino (BNUTO) is an Italian national library and former university library in Turin . It is located in Piazza Carlo Alberto, in the former stables of Palazzo Carignano . Like the nearby Biblioteca Reale , it is subordinate to the Italian Ministry of Culture .

history

King Viktor Amadeus II founded the Regia Biblioteca Universitaria in 1720 . The first holdings came from the University of Turin and from private holdings of the House of Savoy . The further expansion funded by the Savoy was enriched by numerous bequests. In 1824 the manuscripts of the scriptorium of the Bobbio Abbey were acquired.

In 1873 the library received the status of a national library. By the end of the century it had around 250,000 volumes, 4,200 manuscripts and 1,000 incunabula . On January 26, 1904, 30,000 books and half of the manuscripts, including some very valuable ones, were lost in a fire. Further losses were suffered in the Second World War, during which the old library building was destroyed.

The stables of Palazzo Carignano were converted into the new library residence between 1958 and 1973.

In 2011, the collection totaled around 760,000 volumes, 2,000 current periodicals, 4,500 manuscripts, 1,600 incunabula and 10,000 prints from the 16th century.
