The Biblioteca del Convento dei Cappuccini di Montughi (Provincial Library of the Capuchins of Montughi), also known as the Biblioteca provinciale dei Cappuccini , is a monastery library that has been in operation since the 16th century . It is located in Florence , Via dei Cappuccini 1. It has around 60,000 units.

history

The library goes back to the founding of the monastery in 1572, after Cosimo I had given the hill of Montughi , today in the urban area of Florence, to the Capuchins . The continuation of the collection of books of the Capuchin monastery that was created there was finally abandoned under Grand Duke Leopold in 1782 and also lost holdings during the Napoleonic occupation in 1810 and to the Italian state in 1866. Nevertheless, a large part of the collection was preserved because it had been kept in private hands . The library of the Capuchins in Florence was later enriched by donations and financial contributions from various old Capuchin monasteries as well as by new acquisitions.
