The Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ) is the national library of Québec and is located in Montreal . It is organized as a Crown corporation and, according to Act B-2.2, An Act respecting the Bibliothèque nationale du Québec , has the task:

"To assemble, preserve permanently and disseminate Quebec's published documentary heritage together with any related document of cultural interest, and documents relating to Quebec that are published outside Quebec", as well as "to offer democratic access to Quebec's national documentary heritage, culture and knowledge and to act as catalyst in relation to Quebec documentary institutions, thus contributing to the personal development of citizens ”

The BNQ receives approximately $ 16 million annually for funding and is required by law to provide free access to all collections.

It was founded on August 12, 1967, thanks to the collection and assets of the Bibliothèque Saint-Sulpice , which was founded in 1910. The main part of the collection and related works can still be found in the historic Beaux Arts building of the old Saint Sulpice Library, built in 1915 on Rue Saint-Denis, in the center of Montreal . Even so, most of the 240,000 books in the collection are in the main office and conservation center, which opened in 1997 in the buildings of a closed company on Rue Holt in Rosemont, near Montreal. An additional collection of more than 55,000 government publications is housed mainly on Rue de l'Esplanade, across from Parc de Mont-Royal .

Most of these documents, together with the collections of the Central Library of Montreal's Public Libraries , have been brought together in the new building of the Grande bibliothèque du Québec (GBQ), which will coincide with World Book and Copyright Day on April 23, 2005 , by agreement between these two institutions is opened. This new library, a $ 90.6 million project by Patkau of Vancouver , British Columbia and Croft-Pelletier / Gilles Guité of Québec , has been under construction since 2001 and will hold approximately 4 million documents, including a million books, now lighter accessible to the general public. The GBQ will be located on Boulevard de Maisonneuve, in the heart of the campus of the Université du Québec à Montréal .

Another task of the BNQ has been to register ISBN since 1979 , which contain a two in the first group for all French publications in Canada and all non-English publications in Québec. To encourage the use of the ISBN, the government has abolished local sales taxes on all publications that have had an ISBN since 1991. The BNQ has also been publishing a monthly bibliography since 1696, as well as an extensive, 26-volume bibliography covering the period between 1821 and 1967 when the deposit copy was introduced. The IRIS library catalog has been available online since 1994.

The President and General Director of the Bibliothèque nationale du Québec is Lise Bissonnette , a recognized author and journalist. Four General Directors report to her:
