The library of the Francke Foundations is a research library in Halle (Saale) .

history

The library was founded at the beginning of the 18th century by August Hermann Francke as a library for teachers and students at the schools of the Francke Foundations in Glaucha near Halle . Glaucha was not incorporated into the city of Halle an der Saale until 1817.

House 22 of the Francke Foundations was built between 1726 and 1728 as a library building. Today's main library is considered to be the oldest functional library building still in existence in Germany. The library of the Francke Foundations is now a modern research library and the seat of the August Hermann Francke Study Center . Along with the university and state libraries, it is the largest and most important book collection in the city of Saale.

Stocks

The baroque, originally preserved backdrop storage room houses around 120,000 old prints in many languages. There are also several special collections and all editions published by the orphanage's own publishing house. That was around 3,000 publications.

Mainly the subjects of theology , the history of religion , education and the history of science of the 18th century are represented. The collection has been expanded in many ways through donations and bequests. The total inventory of the library today comprises around 200,000 titles from all over the world and an extensive portrait collection.
