The library of the Medical Association in Hamburg (BÄV) was closed on April 30, 2017. It was a special library for medicine supported by the Hamburg Medical Association . It was located on the first floor of the old building of the Hamburg State and University Library Carl-von-Ossietzky (SUB).

The library was founded at the same time as the Medical Association in Hamburg on January 2, 1816 by Johann Heinrich de Chaufepié and began public lending in 1817 on Johannisstrasse. By 1842 the book inventory had grown to almost 10,000 volumes through donations and purchases. A large part of the library was destroyed in the great fire in May 1842, but the then librarian Friedrich Nikolaus Schrader saved the most valuable books. In 1876 the library moved to the Patriotic Society building on the Börsenbrücke . Further relocations took place in 1924 to the state library on Speersort and in 1937 to the house of doctors at An der Alster 49. At the beginning of the Second World War, the neurologist Max Nonne agreed to move the library to his summer house near Trittau , which prevented the collection from being lost. After the war, the library was moved back to the State Library, but it was not until 1960 that it was able to put all of its holdings back on its feet due to lack of space. Since 1983 it has been at its location in the old SUB building.

The Hamburg Medical Association concluded a cooperation agreement with the SUB in September 2016. The valuable holdings of the BÄV were included as the “Historical Library of the Medical Association” in the SUB's special collections department and identified as such in the catalog. In this way, another significant part of the BÄV's entire portfolio is preserved and remains accessible to both the medical profession and the interested public.
