Johann Heinrich de Chaufepié , actually Jean Henry de Chaufepié (born November 3, 1773 in Hamburg ; † March 20, 1855 there ) was a German doctor and founder of the Medical Association of Hamburg and its library .

Life

De Chaufepié came from a Huguenot family who first found refuge in Holland and then in Hamburg. His grandfather was the preacher of the French Reformed community in Altona Samuel Simon de Chaufepié; his father the doctor and midwifery teacher Pierre Samuel de Chaufepié (1730–1784). His two sisters Marie Henriette Emilie de Chaufepié (* October 18, 1774; † 1795) and Friederike Henriette de Chaufepié (* November 19, 1778; † December 18, 1869) were married one after the other to the pharmacist Georg Eimbke .

He attended Gelehrtenschule the Johanneum in Hamburg and the High School Karl in Stuttgart , studied human medicine and surgery at the University of Halle and was here on September 23, 1794 a dissertation on American yellow fever Dr. med. PhD. Then he settled in Hamburg as a general practitioner. His practice soon became one of the most brilliant that Hamburg had to offer .

An appeal from him in January 1816 gave the impetus to found the Hamburg Medical Association, its library and the aid fund for doctors in need . In 1818 he was appointed a member of the medical examination commission in Hamburg.

De Chaufepié was a member or honorary member of numerous societies:

  • 1797 honorary member of the Sydenham Society in Halle
  • 1804 foreign member of the Royal Danish Medical Society in Copenhagen
  • 1820 member of the medical society in Colombia
  • 1823 corresponding member of the medical-surgical society in Berlin
  • 1829 corresponding member of the Swedish Medical Society
  • 1839 corresponding member of the pharmacists' association in northern Germany.

His 50th anniversary as a doctor was celebrated at the meeting of the Society of German Natural Scientists and Doctors in Bremen in September 1844. Another celebration took place in Hamburg on October 4, 1844. A deputation from the medical association brought him a diploma, which made him honorary president of the association, and a medal with his portrait, which the association had made.

His son Hermann de Chaufepié (* 1801) also became a doctor in Hamburg.

Johann Heinrich de Chaufepié is commemorated on the collective grave plaque Doctors of the Althamburg Memorial Cemetery, Ohlsdorf Cemetery .
