The Bichon Frisé is a dog breed recognized by the FCI ( No. 215, Gr. 9, Sec. 1.1 ) , whose studbook is kept by Belgium and France .
Origin and history
The Bichon Frisé probably comes from the Canary Islands , from where it was brought to mainland Europe by Italians in the 14th century . Similar looking dogs were already known in ancient times in Egypt. In the 1930s , the breed experienced a renewed boom in France. In 1933 it got its current name, which means something like curled lap dog . The Bichon Frisé was once common on Tenerife, hence the name Tenerife doggy . He did not come to Germany until 1955 and a year later the first litter was born in Bremen.

This small companion dog reaches a height at the withers of about 25-30 cm; in the breed description (FCI) no weight is specified. The hair is thin, silky, with corkscrew curls, very loose and can reach a maximum length of 10 cm ( similar to the fur of the cashmere goat ). The color of the hair is pure white. The coat needs very regular care (brushing and combing) in order not to become matted.
The body has a deep chest, the loins are slightly arched and muscular, and the pelvis is wide. The skull is quite flat, although the hair makes it appear round, the dog has a scissor bite . The lop ears are covered with long and finely curled hair and lie close and finely close to the head. The forelegs are straight and upright (viewed from the front). The legs are broad and well rounded. The tail is set low and usually arched over the back, but not curled up.
Essence
The Bichon Frisé is an independent and spirited dog. He learns quickly and is therefore easy to train. His strengths include patience, courage and vigilance. If he hears something that worries him, he immediately sounds the alarm. However, it should not be seen as a protection dog. He is very persistent on walks and like every dog he needs regular exercise, but must not be overwhelmed.
