The Big King is a two- tier cheeseburger variant from the fast food company Burger King . The burger has an eventful history with regard to its internal marketing. The Big King Burger is adapted to the individual regional conditions (Asia, Europe or North America). This article deals largely with the burger as it was and is being offered in the US and Germany.

history

In the mid-1990s, the group tried to establish a counterpart to the Big Mac of its competitor McDonald’s on the market. A product test was carried out on the home market in the USA, however not nationwide in the entire country, but only in certain states and areas. Outside the USA, the new burger became a permanent part of the offer.

1996

Initially, a burger called Double Supreme was offered. In addition to two slices of grilled minced beef in a bun sprinkled with sesame seeds, it was topped with green lettuce, raw onion rings, pickled cucumber and cheese and seasoned with the King Sauce . The bun half in the middle between the meat slices, which is characteristic of the Big Mac, was still missing. In marketing the new burger, the company insisted that it contained more beef than the competing product from McDonald's.

1997

The medium bun was introduced for the Double Supreme , but it was soon withdrawn from the range in favor of the Big King, who in turn does not own this medium bun. The new burger was added to the range in the USA and internationally without this third bun disc. Thanks to a competitive price to launch ¢ 99 in the US, Burger King was able to sell around 1.8 million Big King monthly.

2001

The range of products on offer in the USA was restructured due to a drop in sales and new ownership in the group. The Big King has been removed from the program and replaced by the King Supreme . This is actually nothing more than a Big King, but with a different seasoning sauce, which should underline the grill taste as a unique selling point compared to McDonald's. Internationally, for example in Germany, the Big King remained partially on offer.

2013

After another change of ownership of the group and the associated restructuring of the offer, the Big King was back in the US program. But this time with the middle part of the bun based on the Big Mac. The burger was priced at $ 3.69. In other markets, such as Germany, the burger remained unchanged.

2017

In October 2017, the Big King was removed from the program again in the USA. Outside the home country - for example in Germany - the burger is still offered.

Both in the US and outside of it, the basic ingredients are the same. A Big King is prepared with fresh onion rings, two grilled beef slices, green lettuce, cheese, pickled cucumbers and a homemade sauce. The burger is in a bun sprinkled with sesame seeds. This bun was partly divided into three parts in the variant offered in the USA. Variations, for example in the seasoning sauce, are, as already mentioned, adapted to the regional markets and the respective consumer taste.

Nutritional information

With a fat content of 29.6 g, 29.8 g carbohydrates, a sugar content of 7.4 g and 23.4 g protein, Burger King Germany gives a calorific value of 2,016.9 kJ / kCal 485.7 per Big King . A burger thus corresponds to around 22% of the recommended daily ration for a 35-year-old woman.

Variations

The burger has been and is varied depending on the country. In Germany, for example, a larger version - the Big King XXL - has been available for years. Elsewhere there are Big King offshoots with bacon or chicken instead of ground beef. In Japan, a version of the Big King is sold with a black bun. The burger is also offered in various menu combinations.
