Bigger Than Us (English for " Bigger Than Us ") is an English-language pop song by Laurell Barker , Anna-Klara Folin, John Lundvik and Jonas Thander. It was interpreted by both Michael Rice and Holly Tandy on the occasion of the British preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 . In Rice's version, the song emerged victorious and Rice represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Tel Aviv .

At the preliminary decision

The BBC announced that it would change the British Eurovision preliminary decision so that each participating song will be presented in different versions by two performers. There were three songs to choose from, so there were six possible interpreters. Bigger Than Us was first sung by Holly Tandy, then Michael Rice. Rice's version finally reached the final, in which he was able to unite the maximum number of votes cast.

Content

Laurell Barker is already entering the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 with two more songs. John Lundvik also represents Sweden as an interpreter with Too Late for Love . Jonas Thander wrote the Lithuanian contribution in 2016, as well as several preliminary titles in previous years.

The version by Rice is in a classical arrangement with strings underneath. After the first verse and the pre-chorus, the chorus is sung, then the pre-chorus and the chorus again. Finally the choir kicks in and the chorus is repeated in a higher key (see backward movement ). Holly Tandy's interpretation has country music influences.

At the Eurovision Song Contest

As a member of the so-called "Big Five", the United Kingdom was entitled to a safe starting place in the final. A few weeks after winning the preliminary round, it was announced that Sahlene will support the British title as a background singer. The remaining singers were later introduced, consisting of Melanie Wehbe, Linda Pritchard, Desta Zion Wilson and Chin Simon.
In the final, the United Kingdom received starting number 16 between the songs Spirit in the Sky and Hatrið mun sigra. When it came to scoring, the country received three points from the Irish calls and 8 points from the juries, which adds up to 11 points. So Bigger Than Us landed on the last of 26 places.

reception

ESCXtra praised Rice's vocal skills, his stage presence, and the skidding of the song, however, complained that this was too interchangeable. From the preliminary round, Kerrie-Anne was the better choice. The contribution received 5.41 out of 10 points.

ESC Kompakt awarded 20 out of 36 points.

At Wiwibloggs, 6.7 points were awarded as part of the British preliminary decision on the version by Michael Rice. Holly Tandy performed slightly worse with 6.4 out of 10 points. In the overall list of Eurovision songs for 2019, however, the song at Wiwibloggs only achieved 5.8 points.
