Bil Keane
William "Bil" Aloysius Keane (born October 5, 1922 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † November 8, 2011 in Paradise Valley , Arizona ) was an American cartoonist .
Life
Bil Keane already drew during his time in the US Army , during which he was stationed in Australia during World War II . Back home he drew his first comic strips for the daily newspaper, Silly Philly and later the cartoon channel Chuckles . In 1959 the Keane family moved to Paradise Valley. His cartoon series The Family Circus first appeared in 1960. The humorous cartoons, always kept in a circular border, deal with a family with four children, Keane taking his own family as a model. The series, which has appeared in more than a thousand newspapers, is one of the most famous cartoons in the United States.
From 1981 to 1983, Keane was President of the National Cartoonists Society . He was the father of four sons and one daughter. His son Glen Keane is known as an animator.
