The so-called Oak is a natural monument in the district of Iphöfer hamlet Birklingen . An image of a saint was hung on the old oak and is classified as a monument .

Geographical location

The oak is halfway between Iphofen (3.5 km from the Einersheimer Tor ) and Birklingen on the KT 19 district road in the Winterklause forest area. The tree is surrounded by a bird sanctuary, as well as a fauna and flora habitat and the landscape conservation area in the former protection zone of the Steigerwald Nature Park . A parking lot was set up next to the oak tree, and the so-called Trinity Chapel on the Birklinger Steige can also be found in the immediate vicinity .

Description and history

The age of the oak is controversial, Lippert estimates the tree to be around 450 years. Brombierstäudl, on the other hand, assumes that the picture oak is only around 300 years old. The tree, a common oak (Quercus robur) , had a trunk circumference of 5.65 m in 2017. It is about 19 m high and the crown has a diameter of 10 m. The tree is still vital today. Its size and age made the tree a characteristic element of the landscape.

The distinctive tree also meant that it became an important stop for the Iphöfer on their pilgrimage to Vierzehnheiligen . The legend of the false miraculous image of the Birklingen monastery is said to have started nearby . In 1897 the pilgrimage congregation donated a large wooden plaque to the city with the representation of the 14 emergency helpers and a shepherd under a triangular tin roof. In 1911 the picture was renovated. In the 1950s, the Würzburg painter Jakob renewed the picture.
