Portrait of Marianne von Werefkin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Portrait of Marianne von Werefkin is the title of a pencil drawing by Marianne von Werefkin by the artist Alexej Jawlensky , which Clemens Weiler acquired from Lisa Kümmel in 1951for the Wiesbaden Museum . The drawing bears the inventory number Z 19.

Technology, dimensions, labeling

Jawlensky drew the portrait in pencil on white hand-made paper , which is trimmed at the top and left. It has the dimensions 36 × 26 cm / 38 × 27 cm. Verso there is a female nude from the back that is dated “around 1909/10”. The sheet is signed lower left: “A. Jawlensky ”and is dated lower right“ 1898 ”, twice on top of each other by another hand. It is presumed that the inscription came "possibly from Andreas Jawlensky ."

Dating and painting style

If the dating "1898" were correct, then the drawing would have been made at the time when Jawlensky was drawing a lot in the Ažbe School , that is, at the time when he heard "of great form and line for the first time". But this characterization cannot be transferred to this drawing. Jawlensky's drawing style was recognized as being related to his paintings around 1900, which can be traced in some painterly details. In this way he accentuates different areas of the face, arm and hand. He models the figure with light and shadow, like his great role model Anders Zorn , to whom he confesses in his memoirs. The way in which he creates depth and volume with several layers of lines, and the way in which the mouth and eyes are set with few, but strong, short and sure strokes, suggest that the portrait was created a few years after 1898.
