Bilge Khan
Bilge Khan ( Bilge Kagan ) ( Old Turkish ????? ??? Bilge qaγan , Chinese 毗 伽 可汗 , Pinyin píjiā kěhàn , W.-G. p'i-chia k'o-han , or Kutluq Bilge-Kül; * 683 or 684; † 734 ) was a khagan of the second eastern empire of the Gök Turks .
His official title was: ?????? ?????? ????? ???? ????? ??? Teŋiriteg Teŋiride bolmuš Türük Bilge qaγan .
His name means something like 'wise ruler'. He was the son of the founder of the empire Elteriš . As a prince he married Po Beg (or Kutluk Säbig Khatun), the daughter of Tonyuquq , his father's adviser. The brother and successor of Elteriš, Qapagan died in 716. He was followed by Bilge Khan, who was supported by his younger brother Kültegin and Tonyuquq. Under his rule, deliveries from China increased from 720 onwards.
Bilge Khan developed the war technique further: The most successful troops were the mounted archers . The best marksmen were allowed to wear white falcon feathers on their helmets. Determined and highly disciplined, they attacked their opponents in a formation of arrows. They wore armor made of hard leather or metal. Bilge Khan also recruited mercenaries from other peoples, so that both Turks and non-Turks such as Mongols , Tanguts and numerous Chinese fought in his ranks .
His brother Kültegin was murdered in 721 and he himself was murdered in 734. Soon after, the second Turk Kaganat collapsed.
The deeds and life's work of Bilge Khan are recorded in the Orkhon writings .
