Christoph Cluse

Christoph Cluse (born September 8, 1964 in Erle (Raesfeld) ) is a German historian of medieval history .

Life

Christoph Cluse studied history and English at the universities of Heidelberg , Trier and Leeds . He received his doctorate in 1998 in Trier on the Jews in the medieval Netherlands . Since 1997 he has been managing director or consultant to the management of the Arye Maimon Institute for the History of the Jews , with an interruption from 2003 to 2007. During this time, he was a postdoctoral fellow in graduate college 846 "Slavery - bondage and bondage - forced labor" of the University of Trier and research assistant in the DFG project "Research on the social history of Mediterranean slavery in the Middle Ages". From 2007 to 2009 he led the research project "Slavery in the Later Medieval Mediterranean" together with Reuven Amitai from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem .

Cluse is co-editor of the series “Cultural Encounters in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages” published by Brepols Publishers, “Research on the History of the Jews” (Hahnsche Buchhandlung) and the “Studies and Texts” of the Arye Maimon Institute (Kliomedia). He is a board member and treasurer of the Society for Research into the History of the Jews (GEGJ). His research interests are in the history of the Jews in the Middle Ages, the history of motifs of anti-Jewish stereotypes , sermons as sources for medieval history and slavery in the high and late Middle Ages, especially in the urban environment of northern and central Italy. He is currently working on a book project on "arithmetic" in the Middle Ages using the example of the compound interest problem.
