Reuven Amitai
Reuven Amitai (also Reuven Amitai Prize ; * 1955 in Philadelphia ) is an Israeli-American historian and orientalist .
After a BA at the University of Pennsylvania , he emigrated to Israel in 1976 . After a few years in a kibbutz , he obtained a master's degree from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and a doctorate in 1990 .
He is Eliyahu Elath Professor for Muslim History at the Hebrew University Jerusalem and has held a variety of important roles in the university hierarchy. He was twice director of the Institute for Asian and African Studies (2001–2004, 2008–2010), head of the Department of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies (1997–2001) and since 2010 has been dean of the humanities faculty. He was also the founding director of the Nehemia Levtzion Center for Islamic Studies at the Hebrew University (2004–2007).
He completed numerous research stays a. a. at Princeton University (1990–91), in Oxford (1996–97) and at the Central Asian Seminar of the University of Bonn (2004) and was visiting professor at the École pratique des hautes études , religious studies department in Paris (2007).
