William John "Bill" Hood (born November 3, 1914 in Belfast , † 1992 ) was a Northern Irish football player .

Career

Hood played at the beginning of the 1935/36 season in the Amateur League for Ballycarry, after the club was dissolved, he joined Crusaders FC in the Intermediate League . In 1936 he moved to Cliftonville FC , where he was initially active for the reserve team Cliftonville Olympic . After Jackie Preston left to Linfield, he came to Cliftonville in the Irish League to train. In February 1937 he was nominated by the Irish Football Association for a game of the Irish amateur team against England in Belfast. He formed the defender pair with Bertie Fulton when the Irish team won 5-1. Through the game, English clubs also became aware of Hood and in March 1937 he, like his teammate Ernie McCappin , signed a professional contract with the northern English club Liverpool FC .

At Liverpool he made three appearances as a right-back substitute for Tom Cooper in late 1937 , before being released for transfer at the end of the season for a sum of £ 500. Hood successfully protested the fixed transfer fee at the Football League and was allowed to leave Liverpool free of charge. Back in Northern Ireland, his playing career found its conclusion from August 1938 at Derry City .
