Bill Slavick

Bill Slavick (born July 7, 1927 in Memphis ; actually William Henry Slavick ) is an American peace activist and former English professor.

academic career

Slavick graduated from the University of Notre Dame . There he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1949 , a Master of Arts in 1951 and a Ph. D.

After completing his master's degree, he initially taught at the University of Notre Dame, then at Louisiana State University , the State University of New York , Marquette University and Mount Saint Paul College. From 1970 until his retirement in 1995, he was an English professor at the University of Southern Maine , Portland . One of his focuses was on modern southern literature.

From 1957 to 1958 he also taught as part of the Fulbright program at schools in Pasing .

Political commitment

Since 1956, he supported the election campaign of the Democrats in Maine . Since 1972 he has also been active as a delegate at their party congresses.

Slavick, who served in the 7th US Army in Germany from 1953 to 1955 , has been a member of the Maine Veterans for Peace since 1987 . Since the same year he has also been involved in Pax Christi . He is also the founder of the Maine Fair Trade Coalition and Maine Peace and Justice in Israel / Palestine . Bill Slavick has published hundreds of articles on social justice and peace .

In 2006 he ran in Maine as an independent candidate in the Senate election . He received 5% of the vote and thus lost to Olympia Snowe .

Private

Slavick now lives in Portland with his wife Ursula Lukas . The two have six grown children and nine grandchildren.
