William "Billy" Andrews (* in Scotland ; † November 1921 in Dumbarton ) was a Scottish football player .

Career

Andrews played in local football from Vale of Leven before he came to Scottish first division club FC Dumbarton in December 1893 , for which he played ten league and two cup games in the 1893/94 season .

In August 1894 he was hired by the English first division side Bolton Wanderers and was one of four Scottish newcomers to the 1894/95 season alongside J. Millar , John Stevenson and Archie Freebairn . After three goals in twelve missions, he was no longer considered in the following season and was transferred to the second division FC Loughborough in December 1895 . Loughborough strengthened itself several times in December, in addition to Andrews, David Brown ( Blackburn Rovers ) and John Smith ( Newcastle United ) were brought into the team. Presented by the press as a "smart and capable center-forward [sic!]", Andrews played as a half- forward in 46 league games in the following year and a half and scored twelve goals, including a hat trick in April 1897 against the Burton Wanderers .

From the summer of 1897 he continued his career in the south of England in the Southern Football League , first for one season at Gravesend United (17 games / 1 goal), then in Bristol at Warmley FC (11/2). With his departure from the game in January 1899, Andrews' professional career seems to have come to an end, from October 1899 his participation with FC Dumbarton in a game of the Scottish Qualifying Cup is passed down. In 1905 he is said to have been involved in the revival of Dumbarton FC after the club was dissolved in 1901.

Andrews died suddenly in November 1921 while working at the William Denny and Brothers shipyard, leaving behind his wife and child.
