The Tiptons Sax Quartet is an American modern jazz saxophone quartet which (apart from the additional drummer) is exclusively made up of women (initially The Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet ).
In 1989 the Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet was founded in Seattle . The name of the group refers to Billy Tipton , who could only make a jazz career as a man. The band tours North America and Europe regularly, has recorded ten albums and worked with the Pat Graney Dance Company .
According to Wolf Kampmann , the ensemble was created as “the female alternative to the muscle jazz of the World Saxophone Quartet ”.
