In 1989 the Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet was founded in Seattle . The name of the group refers to Billy Tipton , who could only make a jazz career as a man. The band tours North America and Europe regularly, has recorded ten albums and worked with the Pat Graney Dance Company .

According to Wolf Kampmann , the ensemble was created as “the female alternative to the muscle jazz of the World Saxophone Quartet ”.
