Team biology

Biology in a Team ( BIT ; Biology by team ) is the first and so far only Austrian biology competition for AHS (general education higher schools).

BIT was submitted for the German Innovation Prize for Sustainable Education and was among the 13 projects nominated as “best of”. In 2008, BIT made it possible for Austria to take part in the European Science Olympiad for the first time .

concept

High school students who are particularly interested in biology can deepen their specialist knowledge and expand their methodological skills within the framework of the competition. As part of a non-binding exercise , modules are used to work on key topics that are selected annually by a team of teachers. Particular emphasis is placed on practical work and, since the 2004/05 school year, on teamwork . In April there is a two-day final competition in which groups of six, each with one student from the participating schools, have to solve various tasks. A jury made up of people from science and business as well as the supervisory teachers assess the results and their presentation.

The concept was developed by a team of teachers in cooperation with the AHS department of the Pedagogical Institute in Carinthia .
