The Biology Letters are a scientific magazine that deals with all subject areas of biology and is published by the Royal Society . Before an article is released, the submitted work is subject to a so-called peer review , which means that each article is first assessed by other experts before it is published. The magazine Biology Letters was first published in 2005 after a decision was made to separate it from the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society . It has been run as an independent magazine ever since. The editor-in-chief is Brian Charlesworth , a biologist who teaches evolutionary biology at the University of Edinburgh .

The Journal had an Impact Factor , a measure of the average number of citations per published article, of 3.762 in 2011.
