Brian Charlesworth

Brian Charlesworth (born April 29, 1945 ) is a British evolutionary biologist .

Charlesworth received his Bachelor of Arts in Science from Queens' College , Cambridge . In 1969 he received his doctorate in philosophy on genetics .

Charlesworth initially worked at the University of Chicago . In 1971 he moved to Liverpool University . From 1974 to 1982 he worked under John Maynard Smith at the University of Sussex . 1985 to 1997 he returned to Chicago as professor of ecology and evolutionary biology .

In 1991 Charlesworth was elected as a member (" Fellow ") in the Royal Society , which in 2000 awarded him the Darwin Medal . Since 1997 he has worked as a Royal Society Research Professor at the University of Edinburgh . In 2010 he received the Darwin Wallace Medal . In 2014 he was elected to the EMBO . For 2015 he was awarded the Thomas Hunt Morgan Medal . He is also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (since 1996) and the National Academy of Sciences (since 2013).

He extensively researched the evolution of the fruit fly and the sex chromosomes .

Brian Charlesworth is married to Deborah Charlesworth , who is also a professor of biology and a member of the Royal Society.
